Usually, a right handed zipper or button signifies male. Left handed will usually be female. Men's jackets will usually have larger shoulders and narrower waists respectively.

Look at what side the buttons are fastened. If the right side flap is on top, it is buttoned from the left side (if you were wearing the jacket and someone is buttoning it for you), it is a women's coat. if it is the other way, it is a men's coat. This standard also applies to jeans and blouses. It comes from the olden days when the rich men and women would have their maids/butlers dress them and the butler always stood on the right side when dressing his master and the maid always stood on the womans right side when dressing the lady.
Now if you have a zippered jacket, you might look for seams along the front and back that might give shape to the coat, like to accommodate for a woman's bust or for a man's shoulders.
Other than that, you might wear it out on the town and see if anyone points and laughs.... j/k! ;-)

It used to be that people wore long coats that buttoned, and it was easy to tell a man's coat from a woman's coat by the way they buttoned. Nowadays, most coats are shorter and zip up, or have both buttons and holes on both sides. I'd say they are now 'unisex' coats ... but if it's got 'pink' in it, I'd say it's a woman's or girl's coat, although if it has blue in it, it still COULD belong to a woman or girl. WEIRD, but true. There's NO WAY to tell unless you can look at the tag ... some have the 'gender' it's intended for on it, some don't ...

Wow , i thought you meant as in a fur coat , how to tell the sex of the hide !
Now that would have been an interesting question to read answers on .

As to your question , most coats can be sexed by what side the buttons are on , Mens are on the left , womens are on the right .

The theory most often uttered is that men used to dress themselves, while women had the help of a maid. Since most people are right-handed, the buttoning was inverted for the sake of the maid.

Another theory says that women were forced to button themselves using the inferior hand, in order to show them that they themselves were inferior (to men, of course). This theory is based on the assumption that women buttoned their own dress, thus inherently contradicting the first theory.

This is the case is most all clothing

I can't believe all the people that are telliing you about the buttons when you specifically said it has a zipper. Can't anyone read?
It really don't matter, just depends on which side you pull up the zipper with.
Some of them have no flap so it is impossible to tell.
Usually the guys sleeves are longer in garments and the hips are smaller.

I've been told that it's by the side that the zipper or buttons are on. Don't know if it's true or not.

That's an easy one dear... Male garments button right, whereas femme stlyes button left.. As for unisex apparrell, why leave it to a non-choice article... Lets be one or the other... We all need to "take a stand", n'est pas..???
