He is a hypocrite and buttkisser of the USA... he sold out the Palestinians in order to get in bed with Israel and the USA. He was about to lose power after Hamas took control of Gaza securities, so he made a deal with the devil (Bush).
Here is an article I wrote on this subject last summer:
Israel, Jordan, Fatah and Egyptian leaders recently met in Egypt to discuss the division of Palestine and where to go now. Hamas leaders were not invited. Until recently, Hamas controlled the Palestinian Parliament and now resides in Gaza after a military coup. Fatah, which previously controlled the Palestinian executive branch, has since fired all Hamas government officials and replaced them with Fatah party members and now resides in the West Bank. Currently, two Palestinian governments are in operation separately in Gaza and the West Bank with Fatah member, Mahmoud Abbas, being recognized as the Palestinian President.
The European Union, U.S. and Israel have removed the economic and political embargo against the Palestinian Authority that was imposed last year after Hamas won the January 2006 democratic election but then refused to recognize Israel. Lifting the embargo only applies to the Fatah party in the West Bank though. U.S. Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, announced the U.S. would be sending $40 million of aid to the Fatah in the West Bank while Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, agreed to release to the Abbas government $300 to $400 million in Palestinian tax revenues.
Hamas, in an attempt to illustrate a peaceful mission, vowed to fight for the release of BBC captive Alan Johnston. The Islamic extremists group, Army of Islam, has been holding him hostage for over three months and released a video of him last week with a belt of explosives around his waist. Hamas has given his kidnappers an unknown deadline to release the journalist or they will attempt to free him by force.
At the Summit in Egypt, Israeli Prime Minister Olmert agreed to release 250 Palestinians but only ones that are members of President Abbas’ Fatah faction. Also within a few days following the Summit, Israeli troops moved into Gaza searching for Palestinian militants, weapons and tunnels. Israeli tanks and troops killed at least 11 Hamas Palestinians.

though he's palestinian, he incarnates the continuation of Abou Ammar Yaser Arafat's political choices.
As lebanese, I hate all Palestinians, wether they support Fatah or Hamas, but between bad and worse, I think the bad is relatively better, thus Mahmoud Abbas or the Fatah party is the best hope for the Palestinians.
In fact, it's the only party that can ensure the peace procedure with the Israelis in the Middle East, plus it isn't afforded by the Syrian Terrorists, so there is still hope (though extremely reduced of course) for peace in this part of the world,
But remember: he's only a Palestinian
