my car is an 89 mercury topaz and has 240,000 miles on it.
while my car was in the motion of driving as it went up the hill, the battery failed. BUT I put in a new battery and while I tried to accelerate, the scale on MPH would not rise and still it would halt as if it was the battery. What could be causing this?

the mph and battery are totally unrelated. it's either a transmission issue or a fuel filter/injector issue

Clarify! Battery Failed? Engine still running? Alternator going out is why you new battery died. At 240,000 if it's the original transmission it just died!

Really need more info. to look at!

You need to go to auto supply store and have your alternator and battery tested. If still have same problem go to MUFFLER SHOP and get your catalytic converter tested.

WHOULD THE CAR START AGAIN RIGHT AWAY OR WHOULD IT TAKE A LITTLE WHILE BEFORE IT WOULD START AGAIN? WHEN YOU TURNED THE KEY ON WOULD YOU HAVE ANY POWER? COULD BE A LITTLE MODULE INSIDE THE DISTRIBUTER GOING BAD...

I'd guess fuel filter or transmission.
