The 60's. It had Motown, folk, Girl Groups, Soul, the English invasion, and the beginnings of classic rock.

Easy. The forties and fifties are miles ahead of any other decades.
Film music, popular songs, Broadway shows, singles from composers--it all started to unravel after 1964 and was dead by1973. 70s and 80s ws better than now.
