They'd **** themselves !!! Todays youth and under 30's would not sign up and fight for their country because, for half of them, it isn't their country and for the other half, they'd be too worried about leaving their pub, their mates, their drugs and their bed to fight for their right to be here !!! Bring back national service and see what happens!

First it depends on the cause, second if it is national conscription then there would be no choice for those in the age group that would be required to be called to arms. If like the 2nd World War where if you was not called to the forces, you was called to industry or heavy labour, including the women, then there would be the normal ones trying to get out of service, but hopefully the laws would be strong enough to cope with those people.
However as this is a non possible situation due to cost and requirements of the goverment, there could be no National Conscription.

I think many people would be surprised. Our youth are as a whole totally disparaged. The few who cause problems seem to set the standard for the rest in the eyes of some folk. The majority of our young people are just as nationality proud as were their forebears. Perhaps a war would separate the dross from the real youths of today.

No i don't think they would, not in so many numbers anyway and by saying that I'm not getting at today's youth
.
The boys who marched off to WW1 brave as they where, went off like lambs to the slaughter they really knew no better.

In WW2 our youth was still filled with patriotic fervour and pushed by fathers who served in the 1st.

The war our lads are fighting now has seen recruiting levels drop and the desertion/discharge, suicide levels rise, our youth are more informed today, ask more questions but our government still treat the troops as they did 90 years ago, how can we ask boys and girls to fight for us when we don't look after them when they get back.

Of course they would and they should. Canadians would also fight as one in the face of adversity and so would any sovereign nation that faced an imminent threat of invasion by another country. For example if the US decided to cross the border in a military assault I would find any weapon I could get my peace lovin' hands on and protect my home and family.

I would hope we could still surprise ourself and others.
In these days I suppose it is harder to find a common enemy to unite one and alll but looking back to the floods etc where people did pull together I really hope if such an awful scenario took place we would all fight back.

I think it would. It is surprising how people put their differences aside when faced with a common adversary.
