i have the software to diagnos the problem but it tells me codes. how do i find out what the codes mean?

Batauto.com has a trouble code chart or try a site called Therangerstation.com Autozone stores might help also.

I would suggest visiting out some Explorer sites and searching their forums. Note you usually have to register for a free account to get access to the search tools on a given website. A google search on
ford "explorer forums"
would help you find them. If you don't like the first one you find, keep trying. Not all sites are created equal by any means! To get you started:
