I'm writing a book set in France and one of my characters name is Esme, which may or may not be French, but I find I am in need of that peculiar little sign that goes above 'e's in words like Esme. Does anyone know how I can make one of those appear above an 'e' in my word processor?

Here is how it is done:

To add the acute accent (') to:
a, you hold ALT and type 0225
e, you hold ALT and type 0233
i, you hold ALT and type 0237
o, you hold ALT and type 0243
u, you hold ALT and type 0250

To add the grave accent (`) to:
a, ALT and 0224
e, ALT and 0232
i, ALT and 0236
o, ALT and 0242
u, ALT and 0249

To add the caret (^) to:
a, ALT and 0226
e, ALT and 0234
i, ALT and 0238
o, ALT and 0244
u, ALT and 0251

To add the diaresis (the two dots over the letter) to:
a, ALT and 0228
e, ALT and 0235
i, ALT and 0239
o, ALT and 0246
u, ALT and 0252

Another way is to go through the Insert Symbol method:
Click INSERT, choose SYMBOL, choose the accented letter you want, click INSERT

The method with ALT is quicker.

Is your word processor a typewriter, or are you using a word processing program on a computer?

For a typewriter type machine, you'll have to consult your user's manual to see if that character is available. Or there are a couple of other alternatives... you can type the e, and then backspace and type an apostrophe on top of it (might not look quite right), or type the e and then an apostrophe right after it.

If you're using a computer word processing program, like Microsoft Word or WordPerfect, you should be able to do a simple copy/paste from the web. I googled Esme and the second hit (wikipedia) had it spelled Esmé (I just copied/pasted it there). The other way to type the é without doing that is to hold down an ALT key while typing the number 130 on the NUMBER PAD (not the numbers above the qwerty letters). Then release the ALT and the é should appear!

Go to Word Processing Program.
Type letter you want to insert character next to.
Top of page--
Insert
Select Special Character
Select symbol
Insert

Caution: This works on program you are using, but may not transfer to another if not recognized. For instance, if you were sending text to another program or computer.
