I currently have an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (socket 939) and am looking to upgrade to an AMD Athlon 64 X2 of 4000+ or more. As long as I keep the same socket size (939), will it work? Can I use my existing fan? Is there any software/firmware that I need to make my BIOS work with it?

(ABIT AX8 939 VIA K8T890 ATX AMD Motherboard)

Thanks!

You will need to contact Abit to see whether you can install a dual-core CPU in this motherboard. Based on what I've found about the motherboard and chipset on the Abit and VIA website so far, I have doubts that this can be done. However, Abit should be able to give you a definitive answer. This is the contact page for Abit support:

the pages for information on the motherboard and chipset are below.

YES.

Based on a websearch of your motherboard, sites that sell it list it as compatoble with 939 X2 cpu's.

X2's for 939 are very cheap, as they're just backstock since they're not made anymore:

I would suggest buying this cooler for it as dual core processors run hotter than single core, as it's two cpu's on a single processor die:

Along with this thermal paste:

Install instructions can be found at youtube.com

As for BIOS, I don't think you need to update it. If it doesn't post, then it will need the update.

It is the AX8 V2.0 that supports Athlon64 X2 in socket 939 format.
http://www2.abit.com.tw/page/en/motherboard/motherboard_detail.php?pMODEL_NAME=AX8+V2.0&fMTYPE=Socket+939
If you have the older version, it supports single cores only. BIOS update might help.
