"God of Small Things" by Arundhati Roy. One of the greatest books ever written.
I don't know anyone who has not wanted to sit and read the entire thing in one sitting after reading the first chapter. It's short, gripping- based on the experiences of a family in India and how the culture's caste systems impact their lives when the mother falls in love with an "untouchable."
Not only is the story fantastic, but the way it is written is so unique- it skips back and forth, blending past with future so that the entire time you are waiting for the event that you already know happened.
It's magnificent.

I've heard rave reviews about "The Year of Living Biblically: One Man's Humble Quest to Follow the Bible as Literal as Possible" by A.J. Jacobs. The author decided to spend 12 months living according to the Bible. I'm not a religious person, but the book sounds real good. It's funny and honest and a great perspective on life.

I understand that this book has been vastly overpublicized and that even your mom has probably read it (seriously - ask her!), but the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer was really good. It is meant for young adults (teens) but I personally believe that books are not limited to any age or gender.
Also, Peter Pan is a fantastic read if you want to get back to your childhood. You need to be in the right mood to read it, though.
Ishmael was fantastic, with a particularly strong beginning.
And Haroun and the Sea of stories is still one of my favorites.

That is quite a broad spectrum of likes! A challenge to be met.
OK--romance, being a woman--but during ancient Egyptian times--try these books by Pauline Gedge (a Canadian author born in New Zealand and who spent part of her childhood in England)
Child of the Morning--about Queen Hatshepsut
The Twelfth Transforming--about King Akhenaten and his Queen Nefertiti
House of Dreams, House of Illusions--about a peasant girl who becomes a concubine to Rameses the Great
Lords of the Two Lands Trilogy--tells of a royal family that rebels against the Hyksos
Greg Maguire tells the story of the Wicked Witch in "Wicked" which I quite enjoyed. I am now reading the sequel "Son of a Witch"--they are quite quirky novels. He has also written:
Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, Mirror Mirror, and Lost
I have those three on-hand to read when I have finished "Son of a Witch"
For fantasy/sci-fi, I have enjoyed reading nearly every book written by Anne McCaffrey. She has written MANY books about the Dragons of Pern--Pern is a planet settled long ago by humans who left Earth after an interstellar war--they must adapt further to this new world when the Thread comes to destroy all life that it touches. Thanks to the dragons these people eventually thrive. Many of the books are written in groups of three:
Dragonsinger, Dragonsong, Dragondrums
Dragonflight, Dragonquest, The White Dragon
Dragonsdawn--tells the story of how the humans got to Pern
She also wrote several books about a family with unique Talents starting with The Rowan
Although medical mysteries, the books of Robin Cook definitely have strong female characters. Perhaps you have seen one of the movies made from his novels. They are easy reads--I often take them to the doctor's office and read them in the waiting room!
Back to historical fiction--and if you like to read LONG books--try those written by Edward Rutherfurd--true EPICS. I have just finished the two books of the Dublin Saga--The Princes of Ireland and The Rebels of Ireland. The second one certainly gave me insight on 'the troubles' in Ireland.
Enough to get you started. I am not sure of your age but many of these would be high school to adult.

I loved the novel Jane Eyre. It's a classic romance novel, with a twist. Instead of the man being the hero who saves the woman, the woman is the hero. The novel goes through her whole life story, all of her exciting adventures, her happy moments, her sad moments, and through it all she learns about life and herself.
The author is the famous Charlotte Brontë.
