Fist, I would like to congratulate Melinda for her answer. I find it quite original,but can't rate because I'm not at an high enough level.
Second, I would say that humans in general are the most recognized thing in the world. Whether be the facial expression,mood,or the fact of BEING a human, we are easily recognized.
We are the most distinguished organism on the planet.There's not that many things that look like us. All humans can recognize other humans, and even animals can tell we are humans and different from them,in a sense.
Of all the things in the world, we are probably high up on the list for what populates and takes up the most space on earth.
Maybe I sound a little silly, but it's just my opinion.

Any common food such as rice would be recognized by a majority of people in the world. Even if people don't eat it, they should have at least seen it.
Most people of any nationality, race, status, civilization, age, etc. must recognize such a common thing.
Answer like McDonald's is too American. People who believe that are IGNORANT about the world and their thinking is narrow.
If that thing can be outside the world, then the SUN is the most recognized thing, followed by the Moon.

For humans, faces are the most recognizable. The human brain devotes much of it's memory to facial recognition. This is why people often see faces in other objects and babies begin paying attention to faces early. I suspect the most recognizable thing in the world would be a world-famous person's face. Below is a forum discussion on who's face is most famous.

t=Li+ (read up within the t)
h=god
i=i
n=I7
g=9
thus li+ h i I7 9=thing
h=8=2+6=2 and 6=26=7+15+4=G+o+d=God
so that very "thing" is the thing in the bible that glorifies Lord God as was commanded in Ro. 16:something

the symbol of putting your hand up in a sign of peace or surrender.
Its so universal they put a life sized 3D model of two statues, a male and a female, each with their hands held up in an way of greeting and a symbol of peace in attempt that if there were to be any passing, it would be a form of contact any extra terestrial life, up on the moon.
Doubt they'd even bother to be honest, they're probably on to bigger and better things, planet earth in on a mission to self destruction and we will cause ourselves more grief with global warming, vilolence and war then an alien alone could hope to achieve!

A SMILE :)
it means the same thing in all cultures and in every language, even chimps recognize a smile
