Aussie accents are brilliant, and we are quite capable of talking to people outside our country without our colloqualisms, but often we just do it too annoy them. =P
I love our accents, best in the world!

Having living in WA, Tasmania, the ACT and QLD, I can say that there are some slight differences in slang and accents. WA definatly has a roughish accent which I've heard from Europeans is very difficult understand. In Tasmania on the other hand I find the differences in more in the slang used and the apparent slowness of speaking. It's difficult to really say how they're different, you just notice the slightest changes in slang terms and expression. Although I have heard that Australia is a linguistic anomoly as if you travel to say England, the differences in accents are so stark. Whereas, Australia which is the size of like 20 Englands, doesn't really have accent/slang variation on that scale. It's bizzare. Maybe West Australians and Tasmanians and Queenslanders are rougher around the edges, so we speaks differents. Also, do you notice that Queenslanders always put 'but' on the end of a sentence instead of at the front! That was pointed out to me by a Victorian!

Wow!! Am I please to read these responses!! I have an Australian accent but live in another country and am often derided about it. I am very self conscious of having it and personally I hate the Australian accent except that it makes me home-sick when I hear it.

Yes I certainly do agree. Australian men are extremely sexy and not just because of the accent, although that doesn't hurt.

for sure, unless it's the stereotype... I am Australian. However, I find that it's a little strange when you talk to others in different countries and there are no other Australians with you - stands out to say the least...

Yes, I do. I love to listen to the guy on those Outback Steakhouse commericals. What a studly voice. Now, if only my husband could mimic that accent in bed ... hahaha

Well, it depends on the person doing the accent. Russell Crowe sounds tough with the accent while Steve Irwin sounded silly.

Great? Now why do you think an Aussie accent is great? Sometimes I have difficulty understanding what they are saying because their language contains expressions and colloquialisms I am not familiar. I accept that you enjoy listening to them. I think, tho, that their accent is no greater than any other.
