when she asks you what you want for a birthday present or Christmas, say you want your own cell phone more than anything

I think what your dad does is a great way to tackle this situation. A parent having a spare cell phone is a great idea. That way, you can only use it when you need it and you can't abuse the privilege. What do you need a cell phone for beside the times when your dad loans you his spare? To talk to friends? No. A landline is for talking. A computer is for playing games. The internet is for IM-ing. An iPod is for listening to music. If you eliminate all of the bells and whistles on a cell phone, all you have is a phone to use to call mom and dad to come pick you up. And that is ALL a 12 year old needs.

If your mom is a police officer, it is none of your business. Your dad should talk about this alone with her. Or you can tell your dad to get a secret cell phone in a friends name. His friend can call her and you can all find out what is going on. Maybe she is a private PI.

Try asking if you can get a prepaid cell phone plan, so you can show you're responsible enough to in the future get an acutal cell phone plan...and that you will pay for it. Do some research online and find out which company and how much it will cost...go to her with all the information - showing her that you know the costs and how much money you will have etc.

Ask her for a cell phone. name reasons why you need a cell phone. You bring it up the same way you bring up signing a paper for a field trip

Ask her if you can get a tattoo.
When she says "No Way!", follow it up with "Can I get a cell phone instead?".
I call it the 'Lesser Of 2 Evils' ploy. You just need to use a little psychology on those parents of yours.

Good luck! Be sure to give me a call to thank me!

Just come out and ask her but be prepared to explain why you need one and be able to show that you are responsible enough to own one. I am sure that mom will be concerned about constant texting, late night conversations with friends and boyfriends and $300 cell bills.

Try this" Hey mom can I get a cell phone?"

Just straight out ask. Maybe get a "pay as you go, no contract" one for now to show her you're responsible and let her know that you WILL be responsible with it. Tell her that if she feels you are screwing up with it, you will give it up....maybe that will convince her. My first phone was Virgin Mobil and I liked it, had long distance, no roaming charges, and fully featured...call waiting, messages, etc.

Just tell your mom that you feel like you are old enough to have a cell now, and that you can help to pay for it if need be. And ask her if she can think about it....don't just tell her. ;o) Good luck!
