Whatever his faults, hanging back from the action wasn't one of them. At the outset of the war, he wanted to be put in personal command of the Royal Naval battallion sent to defend Antwerp.
Subsequently the Gallipoli operation could have been won at the outset if his urgings to press on regardless of the naval mines had been followed. In fact there were no more mines.

Following the disastrous Gallipoli campaign (for which he was later totally cleared and exhonerated) he used political connections to get a position in the army.
He commanded the 6th Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. This was a front line position. He served in this role for only a few months. During his tour of duty his wife Clementine kept very close with him through letters. She signaled to him when the political situation improved enough for him to return to England.
