If you have recently moved into your home, you may be having difficulties in knowing who supplies your premises with energy.
Gas
The thing that identifies your gas supply is the meter point number, you can find this out and also who supplies your home by phoning the national Meter Number Helpline on 0870 608 1524.
Electricity
This is more complicated because there are 14 elctricity distributors / generators, but there are many more suppliers of electricity.
To find out who supplies you however, you must contact the distributor for your area, who should be able to tell you your Mpan number and who currently charges for the elctricity for your home. The Mpan number comprises of two lines of numbers beginning with a capital "S" the generators' identity is denoted by the first two digits of the second line of that number.
The table below should help you find the correct information:-

Eastern England 10 0800 783 8838

Definitely budget like the other person said. Be conservative because you never know what additional responsibilities pop up unexpectedly. Look for a place close to public transportation if you live in a city - it will save you alot of money for your commute. Only get the essential furniture until you can afford more. No need for anything fancy yet since you're still starting out. Go to Ikea. When you are older and making more money, you can always upgrade and give the starter furniture to your future kids (or the basement). Good luck!

Hi Jason I am so unorganised that as a rule that whenever this sort of question is asked I have to give it a miss. However I moved from my house into a flat and went through what you are doing and know it's mind numbing, so had a hunt for you and came up with these, Good Luck with your move pet.

If its a new house and youre the first person in it, ask the builders.
if not, phone transco and they should be able to tell you. You will need the meter point reference number (just get all the numbers you can off the meter!) or the meters serial number.
Dont wait until you get a bill cos if the last person didnt cancel their supply youll get their bill as well.
As soon as you move in take a meter reading for your gas, electricity and water if thats metered, to check against your first bills.

Congratulations on getting your own place! That is way cool. Ask the previous tenants for this information... or your landlord. That person will have records. You can also call your city and they will run a check on the address. Before moving, do make certain all utilities are on and in your name. Sometimes it take the electric companies several days to make the transfers. Good luck!

ask a new neighbor, the real estate agent that helped you get the house or if it is a rental then ask the property manager.

Edit*looking down at ONE of the answers* Now how am I supposed to know that he is in the U.K.? I did not see any reference to his location either in his question or in his profile. There are places here that have separate companies for gas and electric

Just ignore those Americans! The best thing is to ask around. If the home is rented the landlord ought to know, particularly if the landlord is the council. Try phoning United Utilities or whoever is responsible for the pipes and metering in your area.

Alternatively, simply choose the gas supplier you prefer, and if it wasn't them, they will change it for you.
