Why is it that, despite becoming independent within 6 years of each other, the two countries have apparently taken divergent paths?

Hello and Eid Mubarak!

I did not find anything remarkably common among the people of Singapore and Bangladesh. Btw, Singapore was in much better shape in 1965 than Bangladesh in 1971.

I have visited Singapore 5 times since 1990 and found them (Chinese Singaporeans in particular) to be most hard working, diligent and disciplined people you can ever see anywhere in Asia. The root cause may be their having Confucian heritage and its teachings carried to date. This may also explain as to why the people who were/are follower of Confucian teachings in South East Asia are progressing well than others.

The other remarkable thing is that the Singaporean did not abandon English after their independence first from Britain (when it was with Malaysia) and the second time when it got independence in 1965. I reckon that Indians have progressed ahead than Pakistan, among many reasons like emphasizing on education, continuity of democratically elected government etc., for not abandoning English. It is not only a language but it takes people to whole new lifestyle, thinking and towards knowledge bases which are mostly written in English.

If our founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman could have the 'education', boldness and foresightedness like that of Lee Kwan Yeo (LKY) of Singapore then we could have come at par with Thailand by now, if not with South Korea or Taiwan.

This is a lengthy debate and we know by now fairly well as to what our leadership were doing when in and outside power from the inception of Bangladesh in 1971 till October 2006 when the last political government exited.

Can we draw parallel of Mr. LKY with our present Chief of Caretaker Government (CTG)? Better, the whole team of the present Advisors of the Non-party Neutral CTG who are relentlessly trying to set the course of Bangladesh on right path that one day we can hope that we can also do equal if not better than Singapore.
