George Washington even though he was a really bad general. He barely won at all. He was good at surrendering at the right time and keeping his soldiers alive. He was chosen in an attempt to get the southern colonies in the war because Washington was from Virginia.

George Washington! Though another popular canidate was John Hancock, but since Washington wore his cornols uniform for 60 days strait (and probably stank like heck) John Adams voted for him to become commander and chief, and was senconded. Hancock fell out of his chair in amazment.
