10^-2 = 1/10^2 = 1/100 = .01
So we have 8.36 * .01 = .0836
8.36 x 10 -2 is called scientific notation
The 10^-2 tells you to move the decimal 2 places to the left.
If it had been 10^4 you would move the decimal point 4 places to the right. Get it??

To change numbers from scientific notation to common notation, the exponent above the 10 tells you how many places to move the decimal point to the right. (If the exponent is a negative number, you move the decimal point to the left.) You'll need to add zeroes as necessary for place-holders.
You have 8.36 x 10^(-2). The negative tells you to move the point to the left, and the 2 tells you to move it two places.

well, multiplying 10^-2 (^ is how you show 'to the power of' ) is the same as dividing by 10^2 (note how the -2 becomes +2 when we decide to change it to division)
10^2 just means 1 followed by two '0', so 100
so it is like 8.36/100, so just 'move' the dot 2 places to the left and fill in the zeros: 0.0836
note for Manicunian1993: 10^-2 is not the same as -(10^2) but 1/(10^2), watch out

i'm guessing that you mean 8.36x10^-2 and if that is what you mean this is how you do it.
1) if the exponent is negative, then you move the decimal place to the left and if the exponent is positive you move the decimal place to the left.
2) Since the exponent is -2, that means you have to move the decimal place 2 places to the left.
3)Therefore 8.36x10^-2= .0836

10^-2 is basically 10 squared but minused. So 10^-2 is -100. And 8.36 x -100=-836
