is there a proper and "safe" way to let Vista know that I want to unplug it?
Thanks for your answers in advance.

The safe way to unmount it is to right-click the little icon in the system tray that says "Safely Remove Hardware", and choose your thumb drive for removal.

Generally, there will be a "safely remove hardware" icon on your task bar.

You would click on this and use it to stop the device so it is no longer transferring data.

If you accidentally removed it during Delayed Write, some of the data you tried to save would not be saved.

Hi. One of the icons at the lower right is a "Safely remove hardware" icon. Click it and remove when it says OK.

Not true whiteness. Go to my computer and right click on the usb. Click eject. It will tell you when to take it out.

If nothing is being transferred on to it or from it, removing it will be fine.
