Yes addiction is an symtom of a mental instability. Mental instablitity is a symtom of a problem of perception. A problem with perception is a symtom of not really understanding the world we live in, its that fundemental. So there going to do what they can (if there on the road to recovery) to redefine themselves and also to find a new purpose in there lives. This is also why they tell addicts to stay away from your old friends. You'll know when there ready becasue they've found a new purpose in life that gives them the strength to not care about there drug of choice. ITs a LONG road thou, many hurdles, fall-backs, and self-discovery. So really you never really complete it, your always recovery, but as time goes by you become a much better, much more driven individual.
