Depends on what you mean by "work harder", and "need".
Most people do work harder than ever, even people on welfare. Ask the clients of Northen Rock!
1 - There's no doubt that there is a marginal group out there who could work, but don't; and would if there was no alternative.
But many more people don't work due to (mental) illness and disability, lack of skills, childcare and travel.
2 - Here in the UK, we have an increasing number of NEET's (Young People not in Education, Tarining or Employment). This group survive largely outside the world of work, often without any finacial help.
Taken together, this suggests that "welfare" isn't the key determining factor in worklessness.
On the other hand, the Welfare State benefits us all, as well as the recipients. I don't want to go to work stepping over homeless families, or know that while I may be a bit richer, there's people out there who are literally destitute.
And, I would rather see the workshy paid a small amount than have to burgle my house to eat!

Yes and we be cursed if we don't care for the poor the widow and children in need. This is a nation founded on Christianity and blessed cause we don't forget the poor among us. Try being poor and you have a better understandings that it can happen to you too.
The great depression hit all levels of society even the able bodied. Go to another part of the world and see millions of people able to work and poor. It happens here in the USA and we say don't help. because we think it happens only to others and could never happen to us.
Ignorant vane and despicable generation it does not matter what party your in we should all consider the needs of others, if were not for the grace of God it would be us. It is by grace we can help them don't turn your back on your brother.
We some how forgot they are our family, Well enough said. Yes anyone can work harder but we also can work harder in an ocean that does not mean we will find land with out a rescue party. .
Oh by the way most millioners have filed bancrupsy twice in their life before they became rich. So failure is part of success that poor man maybe the next Donald Tump.

Able bodied people should not be on welfare.
People w/disabilties from being born that way or an accident should get disibility.
I don't think women should use welfare as income. Too many are abusing hte system having baby after baby and bleeding the system.
The gov needs to put a max of yrs that anyone can use welfare. I've known people who abused the system by staying on welfare for 15 yrs and they have a job that pays more than I get!

There are people who take advantage of welfare... but it is necessary. Many people with disabilities, both mental and physical... and yes, sometimes people or families that are experiencing hard luck.
Many people who are receiving welfare have already paid taxes into the welfare system that they are entitled to. Some people take more money out of it than they ever contributed to it.... for valid reasons and there are definitely people who fake disability or hardship to milk it.
But how is this any different from anything else. We have ministers that take money out of charities and schools to fund their extravagant personal lives. We have senators that spend more time on vacations funded by lobbyists than they spend in their own districts.... A lot of welfare is corrupt but we should not punish the people that need it and are entitled to it. We don't close the government when a senator is brought up on corruption charges and we don't burn down the church when the minister steals from the flock.

(UK and continental Europe)
On the one hand, it would be not human to leave less fortunate members of society without any support.
On the other, too generous social welfare states make their citizens lazy. Many of them prefer to get a free ride forever, therefore abusing the system, instead of using it as the temporary, last resort. The longer people stay on benefits the more passive and addicted to them they become.
Difficult to find the right balance, really...
Ali, maybe these homeless people would not be homeless and these workshy burglars would not break into your house, if they simply starte to look after their own business and if the law were strict and reinforced?

I agree that able bodied people should not receive welfare however how is the mentally retarded child that grows up going to get a job that pays enough to live off of and pay for any in home care that may be needed, or do you not care what happens to those that are not able bodied?

if you took out the welfare you will get a very strong family society and a strong economy as you go to work and you become more competent as well. the well fare system is the problem in our society, immigration, families with 4 or more children with different or no dad and on welfare, single mam with partner but partner not "living" at her address, a person want to work but he/she gets more on the dole. yes is better without welfare. at least you have the goal to find a job. not to chit the system.

For the American people to turn their backs on those who are jammed up through no fault of their own would be to go against the very fiber of our existence.
We are the most compassionate and generous people in the history of the world.
People who take advantage of it and just leech off that good nature are engaging in criminal activity as far as I'm concerned and should be put in jail until their attitude is adjusted.

All nations should be judged by how they treat the most vulnerable in their society.
The USA comes way down the list, preferring to steal from the most vulnerable to feed the rich vultures who already have more than they could ever spend!
The sorry thing is, Britain is heading the same way. And idiots like dumb blonde are the reason!

Yes, except in the case of genuine incapacity, requiring more then just a note from a local doctor who couldn't care less about doing the right thing.
Also in the event of genuine unemployment beyond someones control, benefit for a maximum of 6 months. Full stop. Don't tell me the sorry stories of not being able to find work within 6 months, children going without etc.
In 6 months, work can be found
I'm a real right wing witch. Right or wrong, that's how I feel about it
