Very little of what the US did prior to the end of the Korean War caused widespread hatred. Granted, there were things before that which caused the Native Americans or enslaved Africans to hate us, but the hatred didn't extend much outside those groups. In large part because we kept ourselves out of the rest of the world's business, and focused strictly on our own continent - until asked to help in WWI.
Since the end of Korea (some have said it started DURING Korea), and the beginning of Viet Nam, we have had a tendency to meddle in the internal affairs of other nations. I guess we realized we had become powerful enough to throw our weight around.
This "meddling" has been done both overtly (mostly honorably) and covertly (not so honorably) . We have usually tried to justify these actions by saying we were opposing anti-democratic forces (Communism, Fascism, Terrorism, etc.), but a lot of the people affected have reason to think otherwise. At the very least, many of our actions have come across as simply selfish, arrogant and unfeeling.
Once these kinds of feelings have cropped up, even our most well-intentioned, humanitarian deeds get stained with the suspicion of ulterior motives. And suspicion and resentment are a short step from hatred.

It is not complicated.
America is the wealthiest, most free country in the world.
No other country can lay claim to this leadership position.
We have freedom of speech and freedom of worship.
The envy of other countries spoils into hatred for these reasons.
No modern nation in the last 1000 years has given more money, technology, and protection to other nations than the United States.
Good question.

The works of Noam Chomsky cover a lot of this ground. Try "Deterring Democracy" or " Hegemony or Survival" - overthrowing democratic regimes, aggression, subversion etc etc. The United States has done a power of good also obviously.

WE HAVE HAD THE GOOD FORTUNE TO HAVE MUCH ARABLE LAND, NUMEROUS NATURAL RESOURCES, A CONSTITUTION THAT MADE PEOPLE WANT TO COME HERE AND BE PART OF OUR GREAT COUNTRY. WE HAVE BEEN BLESSED BY GOD AND WOULD CONTINUE TO BE BLESSED IF MORE PEOPLE WORSHIPED HIM. AS TO THE BAD THINGS WE WERE NAIVE ENOUGH TO THINK PEOPLE WOULD LIKE TO HAVE THE SAME OPPORTUNITIES WE HAVE HAD.
