u can do what most pple r saying to do, but most consumer mowers r made more to mulch with so the vacum is not there commercial mowers r made to bag so they have more vacum. I would recommend a snapper rear bagging mower not made for mulching, or do what the parks do and buid an attachment to the back of the mower that will push the grass. ( basically a thick piece of rubber n place of the debri sheild n back of mower)

When a mower goes over a lawn, the blades of grass are cut at the same angle. This produces an effect where it looks lighter or darker, depending on which direction you are looking at it. When the mower goes one way for one pass and then the other way for the other pass, the effect is that one stip looks lighter than the other from a given angle.
When mowing a lawn, if you really want a smooth, flat lawn, it is recommended that you mow it one way (say, right to left) and then again at a 90-degree angle (up and down). This creates a bit of a cross-hatch pattern in the lawn. But, the surface is very even and smooth.

Paul in San Diego is correct to a point. If your lawn is lush and thick, this method will work. The grass on the ball fields that you see on TV are mowed with a special attachment that actually pushes the blades over after they are mowed. They don't lay flat, just bent enough to get the pattern. This gives you the sharp patterns you see. I haven't seen that type of an attachment available for home use. My lawn is Bermuda and very thick and lush. I get the pattern every time I cut, but it doesn't last long.

STRIPING MOWER. no back wheels. instead, a metal roller produces the stripe. Here is how to do this with a standard rotary mower:
fertilize with AMONIUM SULFATE and water it in very very good. do this 2 times the previous week you plan to mow. this will make your grass grow like crazy, and help it fill in to be dense. set your mower on the THIRD heighth setting from bottom. mow at an angle you usually don't mow in. the lines will be very visible now, but maybe not like on t.v. !

GO AROUND THE EDGE OF YOUR LAWN two rows wide.start at one end of the lawn and go to the other keeping your mower as straight as possible.when you get to the end where your now in the two rows that you cut around the edge, turn around and cut another line next to the one you just cut .keep repeating until your done cutting.and to keep the lawn looking like you want it don't run the mower over it always go around the outside edge or you will have a mower path through it.
