It doesnt matter, whatever the bride and groom want or perfer, then you can do it. Nobody really needs to follow those dumb unwritten rules of wedding ceremony precedures.

I'm not sure the official etiquette, but it seems like the idea behind giving someone away is for the parents to release their duty to take care of their daughter and giving that job to the future husband. By the strict definition, it would seem weird that anyone other than a guardian would be able to do this.
Like pretty much everyone said, you can really do what you want in your wedding. But if the man giving her away is not a guardian, I would think of it more as a really good friend approving of the marriage.

Yeah, my brother is gonna give me away at my wedding. My father is not in my life and don't want him there so...it's whatever the bride wants, I guess.

According to whose rules? You can probably do whatever you want. However, if you want to ask Emily Post, or some other etiquette queen, then you might get another answer. But, whose wedding is it anyway? Emily had her wedding, so are you going to let her dictate yours too?
