You can mash it up...but fresh is better; if you look on the side of the can I would bet that there is salt, and a good amount at that in the can as this is included as a preservative in most canned goods. It is really too high for a baby so that is why fresh food or baby food is better as a little body cannot tolorate much sodium!

Personally, I would not want all of the preservatives for my little guy. While canned foods often preserve their nutrients better because they don't lose nutrients in transit, the added nutritional value is offset by the preservatives, which I think tip the scales against canned foods.
I'd go fresh, and if possible, organic.
You can cook, puree, and freeze (in ice cube trays for convenience) veggies like sweet potatoes if you have time. (Personally, it was a goal that I wanted to fulfill, but when it came time, the Gerber Organics won for convenience!!).

I wouldn't. Canned foods have preservatives. You can buy fresh sweet potatoes, bake them, peel them (if you refrigerate them after baking it comes right off) and throw them in the blender. Much better for baby than canned or baby food potatoes.

depends if its just plain sweet potatoes or if they are in a syrup. If in a syrup that would have too much sugar, but if just plain old sweet potatoes, I dont see the difference between those and baby food.

I would puree them. Sweet potatoes have a lot of fiber and they can be a bit stringy.
Consider buying fresh and steaming them. Fresh would be a lot healthier for baby.

Check the label first. Canned foods tend to have more salt/preserevatives and more sugars.

Actually a lot of canned foods are healthier for you than fresh.
