Nothing especially creepy about it other than the fact that a man in his mid 30s who was not married in 1900 might have been considered gay. Men tended to marry rather young back then. A 17 year old girl was likely to be betrothed unless she had plans to teach or work in some way. Do some research. Why would such a man be single? Also do a good bit of research about the 1900's. More and more books are being set in the past and more and more publishers are turning them down because their details are just not accurate and ludicrous.
They're, Their, There - Three Different Words.
Careful or you may wind up in my next novel.

I think I've read that book before, what else??? My boyfrind is 19 yrs older than me, so it's not creepy..but try updating the story to today or maybe the girl is the older one, although that that rings a little like the graduate. Oh well happy writing, I'm sure you'll come up with something creative!!!

It depends on how you treat it. a hundred years ago it might not have been considered proper but it would not have been scandalous.
Is it a good idea for a book, hmm, well what is it about? A gushy love story set in a time you may or may not know anything about is unremarkable.
What is it that makes your story different?
race, religion, money, deformity, history
something has to make the story different from just a 'love story'

Yes... there's no reason to worry about this relationship.
This is likely a work of fiction, so you have free reign to write about anything and everything you'd desire.
In the United States, 17 is still considered a "minor", but this thought is not universal, nor has it been around for a long time.
Inevitably, the point is that you should not worry about age differential in fictional relationships you write about. This adds to the complexity of their relationship.

Sounds good to me! I don't know about everybody else, but I don't like to read a book where the time setting and the plot don't match up. It seems to tell me that either the author didn't know what the heck he/she was really talking about or just didn't bother to do anything about it. Plus, I think the idea is cute. Very romantic!! If you need anyone to proof read or give opionions I would gladly take you up on the offer!! :]]

No. People won't think that its creepy. Apparently it happens all of the time. So, depending on where you go with it in the story, it would make a good book idea.

I think people will find it creepy no matter what. It still could be a good idea depending on how the book goes. But in that time it was normal so i think it would be a good book.

I wouldn't see it as creepy, especially if she is 17, that's close to being legal. I think it would be a whole different story if she was 14 or 15..I say go for it!

I think it is perfectly fine. Sounds like a nice little romance. Back then, men use to order mail order brides with a much bigger age difference than that. Not creepy at all.
