These are the books that have taught me how to write. If you are writing fiction, these are absolutely priceless resources.

The Art of Fiction by John Gardner

Creating Fiction by Julie Checkoway (there is also Writing Creative Non-Fiction from the same organization, AWP)

Mystery and Manners by Flannery O'Connor

12 Short Stories and Their Making by Paul Mendelbaum

Writing Past Dark by Bonnie Friedman (more about the lifestyle of being a writer than about the actual writing)

A Piece Of Work: Five Writers Discuss Their Revisions
by Jay Woodruff

There are tons more, but these will get you started. I also recommend The Writer's Magazine. That will help you with fiction, poetry AND non-fiction, and will also provide you with info about markets, conferences, classes, etc.

Good luck!

Writer's Digest has a book club with several books about writing you can choose from. It works like those old record clubs used to. You buy four now for the price of one but have to buy one within a certain time. I'm a part of it and I've gotten several books and they are very helpful. You can go on their website to sign up. Also, stores like Barnes and Noble and Border's have a section for writing that has several books and some of them are the same ones so you might come out better joining the book club since you get four for the price of one.

I've found this book is more useful than 'elements of writing' for novel writers.

Creative Writer's Style Guide by Leland.

But that's just for grammar and punctuation, which is very important, but doesn't get into the craft of storytelling.

There are hundreds (if not thousands) of books about writing.
The one that got me started was 'how to write a damn good novel' by James Frey.

You might consider subscribing to Writer's Digest Magazine, too.

There was one called 'malicious intent', or something like that, which I really didn't like.

Some books are general meandering lectures about creativity, which I find completely useless.

I hope this helps.

Start at your local library or bookmobile, ask for books on writing. High school and College textbooks can also be helpful (and they often have used book sales)
Sorry I can't help with individual titles -- I don't know what kind of stories you wish to write.

Writers Digest Book Club is the way to go for a wide variety.

To learn proper writing style, Strunk's "Elements of Style" is the industry standard.
