It depends on the species, health, and size of the tortoise, and of course, no one is willing to literally crush a healthy tortoise to test this.

Tortoise shells are like eggs- they can take incredible pressure in some ways, but can be rather easily broken in others.

This aside, 10-20" long young Red-foot Tortoises are known to be able to support over 300 lbs on their shell, and the shells of the giant tortoises can easily support over 500 lbs- with some reports of up to 800lbs.

That sounds like a research proposal to me. How could this statement be investigated I wonder???
