You can file without a lawyer but I wouldn't recommend it. The bankruptcy laws have changed so much over the last two years that you'll want to make sure you have done everything accurately to avoid perjury.

Whether or not you can file Chapter 7 or 13 depends on marital status, your monthly spending report (utilities, housing, vehicle payments, etc.) and debt-to-income ratio. Your lawyer will be able to answer all of your questions.

Yes, you can file for bankruptcy protection without a lawyer. Check with the clerk of the District Court nearest you, or visit http://www.firstgov.gov for details.

Your debt amount doesn't matter. Whatever amount makes you think you need the protection.
