there have been two instances where a player has been all three stars of the game. Maurice "Rocket" Richard, who scored five goals in a game, and Wayne Gretzky who, well, you know.
Yesterday, sundin broke maple lefs franchise records in goals scored and points scored, and thus was given all three stars of the game.
my question is does sundin really deserve to be in the "three stars" group? does he really play on the same level as gretzky and richard did? gretzky holds almost every offensive record IN THE LEAGUE. richard set offensive records FOR THE LEAGUE. sundin set two offensive records FOR HIS TEAM. does he really compare?
please understand, i'm not trying to bash sundin. i have alot of respect for what he did, i just don't think he deserved all three stars like gretzky and richard.

I can understand where your coming from.
I believe theres a long list of players that should be mentioned after Richard and Gretzky but before Sundin

As a Leaf fan, I would have thought it would be great if Sundin agreed to be traded and came back next year. However, he is not the guy who made the mess but expected to be the guy to clean it up. Why is that? The guy signed a one year contract at a reduced rate so the Leafs could afford to get some added scoring. It is not Sundin's fault the added scoring did not pan out, JFJ got the wrong guy, not Sundin. To use a non-hockey analogy, what would you do in this situation? You have a nice house in an area you want to stay in with an affordable mortgage, you love the house but it needs quite a bit of renovation work. The only way you can afford to do the renovations is to sell the house. IMO, giving Sundin a no-trade clause was a good choice, giving them to McCabe, Kubina, Tucker, and Kaberle was the bigger mistake. For the money spent on these guys, who also will not waive them, you could make more improvements than trading Sundin. I don't know if I'd trade Kaberle, but the other 3 could be improved upon at a similar price.

The Three Stars thing isn't some official NHL award or anything. I'm not even sure they pick three stars in every rink after an NHL game.
It's just a promotion the team puts on for some sponsor , and the judges are usually sportswriters at the game who have had a couple of beers anyway. They could name the team mascot if they want to.
It was a night when team records for goals and points that stood for more than 30 years were broken, so the team probably used this as a way to thank Matts. Maybe other teams should follow the Leafs' example more often.

Sundin, in the minds of any dedicated leaf fan, is just as good as Gretzky or Richard. Sundin's been the heart and soul of this team for so long. He's under constant criticism from the media and I think that should stop. He's chose to stick with the team when he could be off playing on some Cup contender, yet there's always something about how he's unhappy or wants to be traded. If he did, he wouldn't have signed a contract this past summer. Sundin's done so much for this team and its fans. He DESERVES to be recoginzed for all he's done.

I agree with you he did not deserve all 3 stars. The three stars reward what happened in a game not a career. Stajan had a goal and 3 assists and was a plus 4. Sundin scored the 7th leaf goal of the game after it was out of reach.
Richard and Gretzky got all three stars for dominating a game. Sundin probably didn't deserve either star had it not have been the record breaking point.
His accomplishment is great but not worthy of all three stars, it should be celebrated in a different manner.

I Love the Leafs and Sundin, but the goal he got was fluke. The only player that deserved all 3 stars was Maurice Richard "THE ROCKET"

Okay I don't know why your bringing up Gretzky and Richard.
Your question is if he should have gotten all 3 stars then you dig deep and reach at Gretzky. Relax.
The guy has the most points as a Leaf..that's a great accomplishment. And I am pretty sure a true Leaf fan wouldn't care if he got all three stars...it's the win that matters.
Sundin for the win.

Yes he should have. A small token of respect for the man who set the new all time Leafs record for points and goals. This is nothing to do with comparison to Gretzky et al. It has to do with an acknowledgement of the records set by Sundin.

He set the franchise record for goals and points for his team. He got the three stars for his team. Of course, it was the right thing to do. I don't think it has anything to do with comparing the accomplishments of the other players mentioned. The Maple Leafs have such a great tradition, it must have been a great honor for Mats to get that recognition.
