First, to help put the size of the universe into as much perspective as possible, watch this video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcBV-cXVWFw

After that, realize that that is only a tiny fraction of the sky around the Earth, and the visible universe extends to 13 billion light years all around us which is much farther than the space looked at in that video...I know it's a big number that doesn't mean much, but try to wrap your head around it. And that is probably only a fraction, maybe less than a tenth of a percent of the actual size of the universe.

Basically we will never be able to see the true size of the universe, there could be millions of other civilizations that will never find out about each other, ever. But it could also just be us. We have only even had this delicate knowledge of the universe for 50 years, and have barley scratched the surface.

So it would be scientifically stupid to assume we are the only ones out here....but also chances are we will always be alone.

The only thing in the universe?
No.
In the universe there is:
- gas
- dust
- meteors
- asteroids
- comets
- moons
- dwarf planets
- planets
- dwarf stars
- normal stars
- giant stars
- neutron stars
- black holes
- star clusters
- galaxies
And of course clusters of galaxies, clusters of clusters, etc.
So no, we are not the only thing in the universe.

when you consider that it has been estimated that there are more stars in the universe (not counting planets) than there are grains of sand on earth then it would be considered unfeasible to discount the possibility of life outside our own solar system.

If you're asking, "Are we the only living things?", then, my answer would be:

I sincerely hope not.

We are DEFINITELY NOT the only thing in the universe; there are other planets, stars, galaxies, asteroids, etc.
