McCarthy was a senator who went kind of crazy and started accusing everyone around him of being a communist. He also indicted a few politicians on this charge. Some of the bills he introduced into congress caused a few immigrants and people of the general public to be investigated by the original version of the FBI and the CIA. As a British boy I remember that McCarthy was an anti Communist senator/congressman I cannot remember which. In his enthusiasm to root out communism he set up a committee to determine whether certain people were communist or communist sympathisers, in other words guilty of un-American activities. He zealousness caused many loyal and patriotic Americans and non-Americans living in USA to lose their reputation and livelihoods and was a stain on American justice and public life for about two years before he was discredited. Many of his victims suffered their loss of reputation for many years afterwards. It was a bit like the Spanish Inquisition without the torture chamber.
