Are you allowed to "punch" a football out to cause a fumble? If not, do you have any sources.

i thought there was a rule that you couldn't "punch" it with a closed fist. you can obviously strip it if you want.

Yes. A player can extract the ball from the ball carrier by any means necessary as long as it is not a penalty i.e. grabbing the ball carrier's face mask and twisting it so your teammate can grab the ball from him is unacceptable. Pulling the ball carrier's hair (because if it is so long that it touches the back of his jersey it then becomes part of his uniform) so your teammate can get the ball is acceptable. But any ball carrier in the NFL worth his salt would have to have the ball pried from his cold dead hands.

Yes. Punching it with a closed fist, would basically match up if someone came into tackle you and his helmet hit it out. That would bring a bigger force so I dont see why they wouldn't let you punch it out.

You can hack the ball down with a closed fist, but can't throw a punch as you would be ejected and fined heavily.

You wrap up the running back as a defensive player.....then another player can come in and try to punch it out, as long as he doesnt hit the player with his fist obviously.....the player tackling can try to punch it out as well, but its really hard to do as the player you are trying to wrap up will get away then.

That's like saying... Why do they allowed you to throw passes?

You hold the ball.. if you don't it's a fumble.. period..

Uh...Yeah...Have you EVER seen a football game?...As long as you hit the ball and not "cheap shot" the player...If you "cheap shot" the player, you'll get called for a personal foul...

To the best of my knowledge you could even rip off the ball carrier's arm if you wanted to.
