In Persian and Arabic lore, Iblis is the equivalent of Satan or the Devil. Variations of his name are Eblis and Haris.

In Islamic lore, Eblis was known as AZAZEL, and once was one of the most exalted of angels, serving as treasurer or Paradise. But when God created Adam and commanded the angels to worship him, he refused, and was cast out of heaven along with a band of his followers. They all became JINN.

Iblis is the Islamic name for Satan, thought to be derived from the word for "despair". The Muslims also use the term Sheitan, which simply means "demon." In the beginning, Iblis was one of the mightiest of angels. When Allah created Adam, he told the angels to bow down before the first man and worship him. But Iblis refused, arguing that it was beneath his dignity, as a being created of fire, to pay homage to a being made of mere dust. Allah cursed him and banished him from Heaven. Iblis begged Allah to postpone further punishment until the Day of Judgement. He was granted this wish, and given the power to roam about the Earth leading astray all those who are not true servants of God. In Arabic legend, it was Iblis who tempted Eve.

Iblīs is the name given to the primary devil in Islam. He is chief of the spirits of evil (Shaitan), he is known as Satan, or "the devil" to Christians. Iblis was a Jinn, a creature made of 'smokeless fire' by God (like humans are made of 'clay').
