I had recently quit a job. Now as I am trying to get new employment, my old manager is extremely lying on reasons why I left to ruin my chances of employment. I do have documentation from one prospective employer. Can I press charges and/or file a civil suit against her for slander/defimation of character and if so what else? Please help. I have been unemployed for over 2 months due to this action.

Like I said , I do have documentation as to the lies she is telling about me, and YES I was an outstanding employee. The owners of the business have nothing bad to say about me. SHE is my only reason for leaving

You can indeed sue the former manager. She must be new because most professionals know that you can't say negative stuff about a former employee. Most will only say that the employee is not eligible for rehire at this company.

The down side is a suit will take months if not years but they are usually very lucrative. Find an ambulance chaser who specializes in labor issues.

It is a misconception that they can only give dates of employment and pay - this is not a law. It's a policy with many employers to avoid lawsuits from former employees.

Now - they cannot lie about you, but if you were often late, or left for a specific reason they can say that as long as it is the truth.

If the former employer is lying and you can prove it then you have a case - you must prove that but for what the former employer said you would have been given the jobs you applied for. This is hard to prove.

How would you know what your former employer has said about you? I doubt that's what it is, you probably just aren't qualified for other jobs you are applying for. It is illegal for employers to say anything but How long you worked there , would they re-hire you, when you worked there, how your attendance was, stuff like that. It's probably more your fault you don't have a job, perhaps you are bad interviewee.

The only thing the manager is allowed to say is that you worked there from this date until that date.
