My husband is deploying next month. I wanted to make him some boxers he is a med. How do I know what to do with a pattern that measures from xs to xl? Where do I pin and what do I cut?

Check the pattern's measurements against some current boxers... pattern sizes and ready-to-wear sizes are NOT the same. I prefer to measure both a garment that fits and the pattern (rather than relying on the measurements on the back of the pattern).

Once you've decide the pattern size, either trace off a copy pattern or cut it along the correct size line. Pin the pattern to the fabric (being sure to match the grainlines, otherwise the boxers will twist as he walks), and cut.

On the rare occasions I use a commercial pattern, one of the first things I do is to lay a ruler along the grainline marking
on the pattern and extend the grainline the full length of the
pattern piece. This makes it very easy to measure over from the
selvage of the fabric to the grainline marking at top and bottom to be sure the pattern is on grain before cutting.

The pattern is a multi size pattern. Each size will have a different kind of line, one may be solid another with dashes etc. You choose the size you want to make and cut on the corresponding line. It is a good idea to pin at each corner of the pattern and a few places along the sides if there is a long cutting line. That will prevent the pattern from shifting on the fabric. Be sure to transfer any pattern marks like darts, small or large circles (they usually indicate a stopping point for stitching) and any fold lines (usually at the waist if you are inserting elastic in a casing.) I sure hope this helps and I will also be remembering your family in my prayers!

God Bless,

Cut along the MED line and then pin lengthwise all along the sides, within the marked seam allowance. Use long pins so you don't get any distortion.

My friend just came home from Iraq, she was away from her kids and husband for 18 months. Bless you all!

There should be lines on the pattern with sizes next to each cutting line. Look for the line with MED next to it.
