I got this CD by Vanessa Carlton and in it they just used an ordinary Orchestra without any electric guitars but they some how made the violins sound exactly like electric guitars.
How do you make a violin sound like an electric guitar?

I've never heard of that before. Thats really cool. I'm sorry but I don't know how to do that. You should look it up on google or something because I'm sure they'll have it.

It's a stringed instrument in the hands of a highly talented violinist. I've heard violins sounding like birds chirping, gulls calling and, God help me, a humpback whale, so I don't think making it sound like an electric guitar is beyond the abilities of a talented player.
Unlike the majority of the responders thus far I don't think it's necessarily the case that it's been through a distortion pedal. A violin run through a distortion pedal would sound like a violin run through a distortion pedal, not a guitar.

You must be confusing the sound of a string orchestra playing pizzicato with the sound of a guitar. Those of us who play both violin and guitar can easily tell the difference.

It depends on what type of violin you are using. If you have a normal violin, it's impossible, unless you have many violin friends who are willing to play in pizzicato with you. You also have the option of purchasing an electric violin, though they are rather pricey.
