Well... it needs to be something that is semi-plausible with enough info to make sense but with the realization of never really coming to fruition. It needs to be trendy and it needs to be something that will correct itself.
Thinking.... oh... I know... you can shut down communication as we know if by claiming that radio waves, micro waves and all other frequency transmitted communication is giving every brain damage. Sure... it's unproved and there could be junk science to support it. And there would be a world wide effect and it would cost us billions upon billions... its perfect!

The dark side of the Earth is being caused by the light side of the Earth, now stuck in stationary orbit around a dead Moon. The light side is hotting up fast and everyone wants to move to the dark side. In order to accomplish this mass movement of people, there has to be World War 6 first.
Everything is running out, food, water and air and the forests are now on fire for the last time.
Please call the fire department and the fuzz!

I like that Yellowstone National Park is going to erupt in the largest cauldron on the planet. Spewing Ash from California to Illinois causing crop damage and Global Cooling because the ash blocks out the sun. This would end Al's Global Warming and you could sell Crop damage credits, Home heating credits, and increase takes on all property west of the Great Lakes as they are in the impact zone. This could also get people to move out of the red states into the Eastern Blue States to cause redistricting.

That we are definitely heading for an Ice Age.
One pole is heating up, one pole is cooling and this has happened each time we have had an Ice Age.
The world's temperature has remained stable since 2003,
and will now start to drop!!!!!
Check the temperature on Mars, this will verify that the Sun's activity has gone into decline.
