My son's almost 5 weeks old, and he's at the stage where he wants to hold something. He grabs his clothes and swing them around or take his pacifier out of his mouth and shake it like a rattle. He'll also grab his blankets, but is in the habit of pulling it over his head, and tries to hold on to his bottles.
He's very small though (just over 6 lbs) and none of the 'standard' rattles and toys for babies will fit in his hand. Any ideas what I can give him to play with? I won't mind if he keeps hanging on to his clothes, if that's the only option, but I'd like to start giving him something more interesting to play with soon.

Someone mentioned a blanket with taggies and I accidentally came across this elephant toy.
My grandson, now 9 months, loved toys like this octopus that we could hang on something and he'd bat at it way before he could grab it.

At that age my daughter didn't care about any particular toy or object. But maybe some of those plastic "links" that are used to hold toys to car seats, etc - they are tough for chewing, are anti-choke, and aren't too chunky for tiny hands to hold on to. Or try a small "taggie blanket" - a friend made this little 1x1 square of soft fabric with little silky tags sewn all around the edges, which was a god one for biting and nice for baby to feel. You could also get one of those floor mat/play gym things - you can lay baby down and the little toys dangle overhead to pull on, my daughter loved hers from early on, too.

my little nephew is 10 weeks old, and he is so strong and big, he is over 15 pounds!
ha i know. hes not fat he is just strong an big and long.
anyhow, i was thinkin this too, and i was goin to ask this before i read ur question!
this year for christmas he will be roughly 6 months but even at that age im still thinkin about what kind of toy or toys i can get him.
so i figured out that the only thing to do is to get him things for after christmas when he gets to about a year old. everyone buys little toys and that and soft things!

Rink-a-Links, wrist rattles, hanging objects that clip on to car seats handles etc... look in the toy section of BabiesRUs a lot of the packages will tell you the age they're appropriate for and go from there (trial and error for what kids like)

honestly he won't be able to actual grasp things until he is 3-4 months old. Then he will be able to start playing with his rattles and things.
At 6 weeks old they have the Palmer grasp- this is a reflex. When you put your finger in his hand he automatically closes his little fingers around yours ;-)
Give him his burp cloth to hang on too. At 6 weeks old he will stimulated him with black and white images. He can only focus about 7-10 inches away. That's why he focus on your face when you are feeding him.

He is still very young to be able to keep the grasp but there are small rattles you can buy him Just remember to keep the toys safe because everything will go into his mouth or bang his face and head. CONGRATS

He's not going to do much with it other than wave it around, but you'll want to go with something fuzzy and soft. At that age, if you give them a hard rattle all they'll do is bop themselves in the head with it repeatedly and cry each time. They have little rattly stuffed animals with small areas for gripping for little hands at places like Wal-Mart and stuff.

All my kids wanted to play with were my cell phones and keys. If you can find some of the baby keys that are more like real keys, those work well. Also if you have an old cell phone they like those. You don't want your baby playing with the one you need to use. I figured that out when my son slobbered on mine so much it shorted out. I wouldn't spend a whole lot of money on baby toys. Mine didn't want to play with most of them and they add up quickly. Let the grandparents get that kind of stuff =) Good Luck Mama!

Target has wrist rattles. Plush lil animal head rattles that have velco starps that go around babies wrists and ratle as they move. My son loved them when he was that small. I think its about 3 bucks for 2.

I had this same problem with my twin girls!
I found some little plastic maracas that were very light that they could play with. But you need to make sure they're not too small, so he doesn't run into problems when he puts it in his mouth. But I guarantee you that he will be picking up the stuff you've already got in no time. :)
