Would a reaction take place when the following substances are mixed together? (i would say no because I don't think Hg can displace Al..)

Hg (s) + AlBr3 (aq)

Aluminum is far more reactive than mecury, so this one won't go anywhere. I don't know about at other temperatures and pressures, however.

It would not take place first of all because if you are right about the states of these substances, Hg(s) (mercury in solid state would require to be below -38°F at 1 atm of pressure), and you could not mix that with the aqueous solution of AlBr3
