It shows the Red/Blue breakdown within Montana for the 2004 Governor race between Democrat Schweitzer and Republican Brown. Blue won the race by only 50% to 46%. In Montana’s 2006 Senate race the Blue win was less than 50% to 49%. As you can see Montana is a red state. However, there are two large liberal population centers Butte – is a strong labor union base and Missoula – is an environmental strong hold. The other blue areas have some relation to Montana’s 7 Indian reservations.

Montana is pretty far right, like a majority of Western states.

What the people below don't understand is that even Democrats in Montana tend to be conservative. A Montana democrat will be more conservative than a New England Republican.

Montana is a mixture, but generally conservative.

Montana tends to vote Republican in Presidential elections, but leans Democratic for local and statewide elections. (Governor, U.S. & state senators and representatives, etc.)

Rural areas are more conservative than urban areas.

Eastern Montana is more conservative than western Montana. Until the redistricting following the1990 census, Montana had two U.S. Congressional districts: one in the east and one in the west. Almost without fail, the western district would elect a Democrat to Congress and the eastern district would elect a Republican.

EDIT - to the thumbs-downer: Oh, I suppose you know better because you lived there for longer than 23 years and voted in more than four Presidential election cycles. Thumbs-down and thumb in the eye right back atcha!
