IN a continuous sitting type, only one armrest can be used by a person. Nature teaches lessons everywhere, including in a movie theater. There, you have to use common sense or discretion and understand and identify your armrest.

Just snarl at the person next to you and plonk your bucket of squishee into the armrest...it's yours. As is the one on the other side with your nachos, hotdog, popcorn and pick n mix balanced on it!

In my local theater the arm rest go up and down so my hubby and I put the one in between us up and snuggle and sit our drinks on the outer two.

It goes like this if you sitting next to someone bigger than you and meaner .. it belongs to them...

So what I do is raise one up in the middle and me and my honey share the two outside ones.
