I am wondering what the general opinion is of whether or not adding more slower ram to my computer will outweight the fact that it is a slower speed. Currently I have 1gb (2 x 512) of PC3200 RAM in my computer. I just got two 512 sticks of PC2700 for free. If I add them in it will make the other RAM run at the slower speed, but with the addition of another gigabyte, that may outweigh the loss of speed. So basically, is one gb of PC 3200 better than 2gb of PC2700? What do you think?

It's an older comp: Pentium 4 w/ HT 2.8ghz, XP Pro, Nvidia X5900XT w/ 256 video card, SoundBlaster Audigy 2 sound card, 320gb hard drive. The motherboard can handle up to 4gb of RAM and does have the two open slots available.

If your CPU is the 800MHz version, it would simply force the PC2700 to run at PC3200 speed, stretching it to above the limit, but if you CPU is the 533 or 400(rare now), then adding the extra 2 sticks would just improve it as all 4 memory sticks would run at 2700 speed.

The 256MB will force the memory speed of the new memory back down to 333mhz. The small amount of RAM will not make that much of a difference.

also, more ram, even if it runs at a lower speed is better. Programs you use often, are loaded into your ram, and your pc uses less traffic on your harddrive. This doesn't make your pc faster, but it handles a lot better.
