2500 years later we still do it; I know I do before each trip with my boat.....cant hurt and seems to work so far!

Well, if you want a big bang, by all means shake the bottle first. Trouble then is the fizz goes all over the place and you have less to put into your glass. Expensive way to go and maybe some spumante would be cheaper for you in the long run, rather than champagne?
