They will give you the same amount of heat as a normal heater. IE a 400watt oil filled radiator will give the same heat as a 400watt halogen heater. The difference is that the halogen heats up immediately but cools down the same. A oil filled takes time to reach heat but takes time to cool down.A fan heater heats up quickly but will blow the warm air around.

RE:
How efficient are halogen heaters?
are they the best way to get instant heat? Anyone ever compared energy cost to heat produced. I know little about this subject but want an efficient low cost heat source for short periods.

they are very efficient but unfortunately wont heat your flat as they work on an infrared frequency that actually heats the body which is why they are used in warehouses and smoking shelters in pubs etc. What kind of gas heating do you have as a well installed properly regulated gas heating system should be cheaper to run than electric heaters

They are readily available, cheap ( £10) usually made in China, but produce too much light and not enough heat, so are neither a good light source nor a good heater. Being cheap they are ideal as a back-up .Always bear in mind that they heat by RADIATION ONLY, so if you intend heating the air in a room forget it.
I own one and would'nt be without it for quick warm up.

They are ideal for keeping you warm in a large space.
They are also perfect for heating a conservatory where there is every chance that as soon as your underfloor heating has heated the room, the sun comes out -you have to open the windows and doors as the temperature rises over 40 C and all that heat you paid for is wasted!
Halogen is off at the flick of a switch and saves you money.

Although halogen heaters work, I think they are not safe. What about micro furnaces? I trust them.

They are too bright and do not give out much heat. They also whack your electric bill up.
