I have noticed alot of late-20's to late-30's actors popping up lately! I would rather see a well trained "older" actor than some bubblegum snapping kid who only became an actor b/c their cleavage was nice and they scored the lead in their high school play.

You're looking for absolutes and there are none.
If your goal is to be a movie star and famous, then it's true that as you get older, it gets more difficult because so many of the roles out there are for people in their 20's (that includes those in their 20's who are playing teens). If you're female and you want to be a leading lady type, then those roles seem to greatly diminish after 40. As a female in my 20's, I would be lying if I said that I didn't think about age too, because lets face it, marketability counts for a lot. But I definitely don't think late 20's is too old. There are tons of roles for that age group as well as into the 30's. Naomi Watts didn't get her "break" until her mid-30's. She had been working consistenly up until then, but hadn't attained a high level of recognition. If your are male, the rules seem to be different. There isn't the same standard for youth and beauty.
But you can also look at it this way: Tons of 18-25 year old hopefuls pour into L.A. every day and burn out within a couple years because they haven't been able to "break in". So, even though there may be fewer roles for the over-30 group, there's also a lot less competition for those roles.
If you want a figure though, here's one : 10 years. This is a figure I've seen thrown around in acting circles as reasonable amount of time it could take from when you start your training to expect to be earning a living off acting alone. Again, there are no absolute's, but if you've been training and building your resume for 5 years and then spend another 5 years pursuing it professionally and haven't gotten enough work to support yourself, then it may be time to consider another career and leave acting as a hobby.
This is not an industry you can go into with the goal of being a famous movie star. You have to do it becuase you love it, that's it. Everything else is icing.

If you think late 20s is too late, then it is too late to start acting. I personally don't think you can put an age on it. If the right person is in the right place at the right time, then who knows how quickly they will become famous.

Clara Peller
Richard Farnsworth
Zelda Rubinstein
There will never be another Audrey Hepburn.

Actors of all ages are needed for various roles. In order to become famous you would have to be a really good actor and it would take a lot of luck and determination. Right now it seems like there are a lot of people going into acting, but not a whole lot of job availability. It really is never too late to start, but you should make sure that you have the skill, determination, and patience necessary to succeed.

Late 20's is not too late, especially if you have a youthful look. It's probably an ideal time. Even into your thirties is a fine age to start. It's all about your looks and image in Hollywood, remember. You shouldn't limit yourself to being the next anything, though. Blaze your own path in the acting world and see what you can become.

It varies with the individual. Many well known actors did not start until they were quite mature. If you want to emulate a particular actor, then forget it altogether, for that does not work as a goal. I have a student in England who is just starting at the age of 35 and she seems like she has a real chance at sucess.

If you have the talent, you may start a career at any time.
Obviously if you are more mature when you do, the roles you will be eligible for will be less, as you will not be considered for younger parts.
If you want to do it, then do it and you will not be sorry.
