Deism really came into play in 18th century europe. It was a big part of a complete shift in ideals in the country. Voltaire is a very famous one. Most were philosophes, and Voltaire himself advocated religious toleration and criticzed traditional religion. They don't believe in religious miracles or Jesus' ressurection and said Jesus was a good man but "not as divine as Christianity claimed." They thought of God as a "clockmaker, [who] had created [the world], set it in motion, and allowed it to run without intereference." Many people who believe in religious freedom adopt the views of Deism, at least in part.

Deist is a peron or persons that have concluded that there is a GOD. They have known proven facts but only their beliefs that it is true.

Famous deists are Plato, Thomas Jefferson, Ethan Allen, Aristotle, George Berkley, Cicero, Charles Darwin, and Albert Einstein.

The salient aspect of a Deist is someone who believes that the laws of Nature proceed from a Deity who, after having established the laws, has thereafter REFRAINED from interfering in the universe or in people's lives. They are not "theists" who believe in miracles and intercession by reason of prayer or caprice. They go beyond "Atheists" by believing in the primacy and permanence of something: the Laws of Nature.

Scientists must believe that the laws of Nature are the same from Monday to Tuesday else they couldn't function. Likewise, miracles are counter to this. Most scientists, therefore, have at least some element of Deism in their makeups although some are able to separate their professional activity from their personal lives and claim to be able to maintain theistic beliefs outside of science.

The founding fathers were mostly Deists ( Franklin, Madison,et al ) and, of course, Jefferson who wrote "...the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God"
