You may have conflicting drive letters assigned.
with HDD plugged-in:
right-click my computer --> Manage --> Disk management
look for the usb device, then right-click it.
Change drive letter to something unused.

If it is a plug and play you might not have gotten any message. I didn't when I installed a plug and play monitor.
open My Computer
is the external hard drive the only USB device you have plugged in at this time?

If it is, double-click the item to see if it is the ex. HD

To put an icon for it on the desktop, right-click on the drive letter for the ex.HD
select create shortcut
if the shortcut icon does not go to the desktop, drag it there or cut/paste.

If it does not give an ERROR, try the following
Right click MY COMPUETER
Select MANAGE
Locate and click "Local Disk Management"

See if teh Ext 160G drive lists in the lower right pane of the window
If so RIGHT CLICK it and choose the option to assign/change drive letter
Give it an unused drive letter
Click OK
Restart windows for settings to take full effect
Enjoy drive

You may need to install the driver for the hard drive. If it came with a CD, use it. If not, download from drive manufacturers website.
