Well, it depends on the nature of the private citizen's speech.

Not all speech is protected in every circumstance.

Threats are not protected speech.
Slander is not protected speech.
Inciting violence is not protected speech.
Speech while under the auspices of an organization or entity where said speech violates the rules is not protected speech.

The real question is:
When will americans realize we live in a world of conflicting values?

We are a democratic nation, based on a capitalist economy... neither of which really have freedom at their core.

Especially capitalism... capitalism is based arround survival of the fittest, not survival of all....

democracy can never truely be free because there has to be two sides, and their must be a looser....

Yet... those things we hold closest to our heart as americans (mainly the bill of rights) are not really aspects of either our economy or our government.... even in ancient greece some people were not free...

people have a misunderstanding of free speech, most people think this means they can say whatever they want with out consequence, its is wrong, it only protects you from being jailed, tortured or executed for your speech, a private business or residence have every right to censer the speech of an employee or family member, you wont go to jail for calling me an a**hole, that's free speech, but you might go to the hospital for a broken nose
