Tyler is correct in that the "original" American Football League played for one season in 1926, and consisted of Philadelphia, New York, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Rock Island, Brooklyn, and Newark. The second incarnation played for two seasons from 1936-7 and a third one from 1940-1. The rival league to the NFL after WW II was the All-American Football Conference, which gave rise to the Colts, 49ers, and Browns. Only in 1960 did the fourth AFL form, which eventually merged with the NFL in 1970.
