in the West and our focus should shift to the less developed countries where honor killings, lack of education, hunger, rape etc. are parts of the every-day life? Do we care about worldwide equality for all women from a humanitarian perspective, or humanitarian efforts in our own backyard is enough?

Rainbow: Umm...the Talibans are even stronger now than they were pre 9/11.

Shifting focus to other parts of the world means putting more emphasis and energy, not neglecting your own backyard.

Rainbow: It's OK. I know that's the misconception, while locals and the Middle East are fully aware of this sad fact. Of course, the US will deny this. Here is an article if you're interested:

Boggs: I believe our facts differ because we're speaking of different regions in Afghanistan. While your statement of improvement is correct in some regions, Talibans continue to gain strength and domination, improving their capabilities in other regions, with additionals support from the outside (which was less pre 9/11), this is particularly the case along the border regions.

And FYI, I do have relatives who reside there.

Yes it does need to be concentrated abroad. there will still need to be issues addressed here at home but the crimes listed above are truly barbaric and need to be stopped.
Also I do not know how you can say that the Taliban is stronger now than before 9/11. Just ask women there what it was like under the rule of the Taliban . They had absolutely no rights, could not go to school, had to be covered 100% of the time. They may be stronger on a guerilla military aspect but as in creating and enforcing laws that statement is incorrect. And the article you provided only states that they are stronger from when they were overthrown. Not stronger than your pre 9/11 statement.

I do not think the mission of Feminism has been, more or less, accomplished.
In the West our focus should shift to the less developed countries where honor killings, lack of education, hunger, rape etc. are parts of the every-day life, but where exactly do you think we should shift our focus to?
We do care about worldwide equality for all women from a humanitarian perspective. But humanitarian efforts in our own backyard are never enough in my humble opinion.
Instead of shifting focus here and there, we should focus all our efforts to get focused on the matters that we care about from a humanitarian perspective. For this, it is not good to stop all activities in our own backyard and assume that the mission of Feminism has been, more or less, accomplished.

in a sense yes.
but we need to remember that local (USA) issues are prob always going to be abundant, as we live in a unjust world. the issues I speak of are not related to the normal feminist idealistic such as equal pay and job opportunity, I am speaking of problems like the young ladies that are sold into marriage with bigot husbands at very young ages and such.
BUT I do agree with the statement above about women suffering in other parts of the world, and so yes I think our loyalty to do good should lye where it is needed most.
btw Lioness, good question.

In the West? Yes, for the most part. We should definitely save any problems we have for later so we can focus on non-Western women.

This is one of the most substantial questions I've yet read on GWS.
There are still inequality issues in the West, but, they likely don't directly involve death.
So, I agree. A shift of attention to higher-priority needs would best serve us all.

I think Feminism's focus has shifted to helping our sisters in developing countries. Jay Leno's wife called America's attention to the killing of women in Afghanistan, and we have just about squashed the Taliban.
I think most feminists are doing whatever they can to help the disadvantaged women of the world.
EDIT: I'm sorry. I thought America going into Afghanistan changed that. My bad.

1) Yes, mostly.
2) Yes, we should shift our focus to the rest of the world. But women there don't want to be fully "liberated" from having children, either. Birth control access is great for everyone, but if we are basing "equality" on the degree to which women use substitute child care and match numbers with men in the workplace, shouldn't we ask if women actually agree with this goal? Most don't - worldwide.

You have got to just love a question that requires a single word answer. No! To the end of Feminism. No! To The evils of society. No! We don't care enough about anything anymore other than those things that impact upon Our individual lives.

Feminism has always been selfish - it has achieved nothing for non-middle class women, and has been entirely geocentric.
